Denver Public Schools: Setting Students Up for Success From Age 3
Denver Public Schools (DPS) is committed to ensuring every student starts their academic journey with a strong foundation. With more than 80 high-quality Early Childhood Education (ECE) programs located in neighborhoods across the city, DPS offers families a wide range of options to meet their child’s unique needs. DPS programming starts at age 3.
From Spanish and dual-language instruction to services for children with special needs, DPS preschool programs are designed to nurture the whole child through play, school-readiness activities, and a safe, supportive environment.
High-Quality, Flexible Preschool Programs
DPS ECE programs are built around best practices in early childhood education. Students who attend DPS preschool consistently score higher in reading in kindergarten than those who do not attend a DPS preschool — proof that early childhood education sets students up for success for the rest of their educational journey.
Each classroom maintains a low adult-to-child ratio of no more than 1:10, allowing for individualized attention and stronger relationships. Families can choose from full- or half-day programs based on what works best for them.
Every program includes:
- Play-based and developmentally-appropriate educational experiences that support social, emotional and academic growth.
- Safe and nurturing classrooms that foster confidence and skills for healthy social interactions.
- School-readiness focus that supports emergent literacy skills and helps students transition into kindergarten.
- Healthy snacks and lunch provided each day (depending on full- or half-day offering).
Inclusive and Personalized Learning
DPS recognizes that every child learns differently. That’s why preschool programs include a variety of teaching styles and supports, such as:
- Dual-language instruction to support bilingual learners.
- Child Find services for students with disabilities.
- Montessori classrooms that encourage independence and self-direction.
Families can explore options tailored to their child’s learning style, language needs, and developmental goals.
Universal Preschool and Denver Preschool Program: Making Pre-K More Affordable
Thanks to Colorado Universal Preschool (UPK), every 4-year-old in Colorado is eligible for up to 15 hours per week of free preschool in the year before they enter kindergarten. This saves families an average of $6,100 per year in preschool costs. Additional support is available for families who are considered low-income and have qualifying factors.
In addition to UPK, Denver Preschool Program (DPP) provides tuition assistance for all Denver families with 4-year-olds, regardless of income or immigration status. DPS includes the DPP application as part of the SchoolChoice enrollment process, so there is no separate process to apply.
By combining UPK and DPP with DPS’s wide variety of programs, families can access high-quality early education without the financial burden.
Enrolling in Preschool
Enrolling in ECE through DPS is a three-step process:
- Use the DPS School Finder to explore ECE programs in your area. You can search by location or find schools based on your interests.
- Submit a SchoolChoice application.
- Once you have accepted a seat at a school, submit a UPK application.
Step-by-step instructions and resources can be found on the DPS SchoolChoice website.
