The Mysteries of Montezuma Castle National Park

By Meg Brunson

Remember that America the Beautiful Pass we talked about when visiting the Grand Canyon National Park?  Well, it came in handy here as well! In just these two visits, we’ve recouped over half the cost of our America the Beautiful Pass, cha-ching!

The hike to Montezuma Castle is really more of a walk as you are instructed to remain on the paved pathways at all times.  The walk itself is not difficult and is appropriate for a visitor of any age. Although you can’t get super close to the ruins themselves, they’re easily visible from the pathways.  With that said, a pair of binoculars can be very helpful to see details as well as wildlife that inhabits the ruins.

The history surrounding Montezuma Castle is fascinating as people settled there and...well, I’ll just let you get into all that yourself.  But trust me, it’s great stuff! There’s even a mysterious element that is played up by a gentleman selling handmade wooden flutes at the beginning of the walk and he will periodically play a melody on them as well.  This is amplified by, well, an amplifier so it echoes throughout the ruins.

If you're traveling in mid-Arizona (near Sedona) you should also plan a stop to Montezuma Castle! Start planning at https://www.nps.gov/moca/index.htm
